Whiskies

As befits a pub with such a rich Celtic heritage, the Lass strives to offer a rich array of fine whiskies and other spirits from around the globe.

Lowland Malts are dry and light with fewer characteristics than their counterparts from further north with almost all the production is used for blending. Islay Malts are the most distinctive, receiving their weighty, smoky and pungent flavour from the Islay-peat fires used to dry the malt. Highland Malts are sweeter and full-bodied with many subtle flavours and a rich mellowness, whereas Speyside Malts are sweeter still, less full-bodied but richer and more complex.

In addition we also have limited availability of the only single Welsh Malt, Penderyn, to be produced for more than 100 years and is finished in rare Madeira casks, Penderyn has a beautifully balanced taste, and is suitable for drinking on all occasions. While Irish Malt, Bushmills 10, is made using unpeated barley so as to avoid any smokiness and is triple distilled making it more refined, smoother and lighter and is aged in old Bourbon casks for at least 10 years to give extra richness.

The only way to class the malts is to try them. You'll find as many differences in flavour as there are in the wines of France, yet there is no official classification of quality. So experiment - and enjoy yourself!
